It's not widely known that George Orwell's writing carreer took off in Burma, where he was confronted with a monster that crushed man's desire for freedom and dignity, a faceless bureaucracy existing only for its own power. For him, this monster was then embodied by the British colonial administration. This is what his book Burmese Days is about. When it was published, and even later, when Orwell, the young policeman from Burma, became a well-known writer, no one was interested in a chronicle of the oppressive conditions in an unknown country. More than seventy years have passed since then. Even now, the world knows nothing about this country, nor does it aspire to get to know.
